From Believer to Disciple

MAKING THE TRANSITION FROM CASUAL IDOLATRY TO BEING HOT FOR GOD

We come to Christ because He loved us first. We respond to His love because of our need. Then, we’re supposed to grow in faith and share with others the gift of salvation that we have received. We might even go to church, but all too often, our focus remains on what God can do for us–treating Him more like a sugar daddy than our Creator and the God of the universe. We regard His commandments like suggestions and relegate his callings to opportunities that we can take or leave.

I was born again in July of 1981. It feels like light years ago. As I look back, I feel like I have wasted so much time and allowed so many distractions, made so many bad decisions, and disobeyed God over and over. From being a single mother to a failed marriage to serving in ministry to being church homeless for 12 years and back. I can say firsthand that when God says that he will make up for that time, He means it. I’m so grateful for RainFire Church and Kim Whyatt and the Holy Spirit for whispering the phrase “God Stalkers”.

Romans 12: 2 from The Message translation tells us, “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it…” God Stalkers is about helping us all to recognize when our attention has drifted away from God so we can make an immediate adjustment to get and stay on course. We created a club so we can …see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out…

OUR BEGINNINGS

When God brings things together, it’s obvious. God Stalkers is truly one of those things. Kim Whyatt and I met at RainFire Church. At the beginning of the year, our pastor, Joann Rosario Condrey asked if I would serve as co-leader of our New Believers small group with Kim. I said, “Yes,” of course. Pastor Joann told Kim that she had someone in mind, but she didn’t tell her who. When I showed up, she exclaimed, “I was hoping it was you!”

Immediately, we knew it was a divine appointment. We started working on the curriculum, and we discovered that we both had a love for the Word–reading it, learning it, sharing it, you name it! I knew that I had to encourage her to develop, and I wanted her to help me. We are doing just that.

When our second round of small groups was approaching, the teacher in me wondered if a name change would be in order. Afterall, the fundamentals of the faith life are for everyone, not just new Christians. Kim agreed. Pastor Joann agreed. But what would we call it? Days earlier the Holy Spirit had quietly spoken. I scribbled “#godstalkers” hastily in the corner of my journal and went on my way. It was that simple and that powerful.

OUR FOUNDATION

“As the deer pants for water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. Where can I find him to come and stand before him?” – Psalm 42: 1-2 The Living Bible
